Holidays, Thankfulness and Resolutions

During the holiday season, our thoughts often turn to gifts, giving, gratitude and all we are thankful for. Our members continually tell us how thankful they are for the protection they receive from ABE-sponsored insurance for themselves and their families. In addition, members participating in ABE-sponsored insurance plans have an easy way to give back to the good works of the legal profession. In the rush of the holidays, we shouldn’t forget to keep ourselves and our families protected with quality, affordable insurance from trusted insurers exclusively for ABA members. As you plan your New Year’s resolutions, make a note to review your insurance protection. It is one of the most important things you can do in the New Year. After you make your annual review, give me a call at 800-621-8981 ext. 6420 to discuss your current ABE-sponsored insurance and, if your needs have changed or you currently don’t have ABE-sponsored insurance, which ABE-sponsored plans might best meet your insurance needs.

It’s Open Enrollment Time – Do you have the right benefits?

This is the time of year when many employers offer open enrollment for benefits. As your Personal Insurance Representative, I want to make sure you know about the ABE-sponsored coverages that can protect you, your family and your practice. If you would like to discuss your employer’s benefit changes and how you might supplement your coverage with ABE-sponsored insurance plans, please call me at 800-621-8981 ext. 6420.

The Importance of Insuring Children at an Early Age

An insured called me today to add her newborn baby to her ABE-sponsored Excess Major Medical insurance plan.  I congratulated her on the birth of her child and applauded her for realizing the importance of insuring children as soon as possible.  If you are currently insured with the ABE-sponsored Excess Major Medical insurance plan, your newborn is automatically insured for the first 31 days, but you must notify us in writing if you want to add them to your policy.  No underwriting is required if you notify us within 31 days of birth, and your newborn will be covered immediately. Make sure you have the peace of mind knowing that your children will have supplemental medical coverage in case of a catastrophic accident or illness as soon as possible.  Leave your comments about child insurance coverage here.

How Do I "ladder" My Life Insurance?

A member called the other day and mentioned his increased financial obligation as his child begins college. I offered to provide information on ABE-sponsored group 10-year level term life insurance coverage, which may compliment his existing ABE-sponsored group 20-year level term life insurance. This would afford him additional protection during this period of increased financial responsibility. This practice, called laddering - can provide increased protection during a period of time when you may need it most. Premiums remain level for the length of the term of coverage, and by laddering your coverage, you have the security of knowing you have protection for your family at an affordable cost. Whatever your current circumstance, make sure you have adequate insurance protection to help meet your family’s financial needs. Comments on laddering your life insurance? We would like to hear from you!! Just post a response to my blog.

Promoted or Changed Firms?

This has been a time of change for many members who have found themselves at new firms or starting their own firms. In addition, despite the current economic climate, some ABA members have continued to receive increases in income. If you are either of these ABA members, have you reevaluated your finances, including insurance coverage for your most valuable asset: your income?

We increased our monthly maximum benefit amount from $9,000 to $12,000 for our Group Long-Term Disability Income Insurance, providing extra protection in case of a total disability. Remember, these are own-occupation benefits for up to five years, which will provide needed income if you are disabled and unable to continue working in your own profession, including specialty of law, not just any job. ABE-sponsored Insurance “Moves” With You

Last week I spoke to an insured member who had recently opened his own firm and said he was very fortunate to have purchased ABE-sponsored Disability Income Insurance because he is able to continue with this plan once he started his new firm.
If you decide to change jobs or careers, you may lose your employer-provided insurance coverage, but you can “take” your ABE-sponsored coverage with you, as long as you remain an ABA member and otherwise meet eligibility requirements. This feature eliminates the hassle of securing new insurance coverage in the midst of an already stressful career move.
Recently many attorneys have left big firms and started their own practice. This valuable feature of every ABE-sponsored plan may be more important now than ever before.

On October 15th the Wall Street Journal reported that for the first time since Cost-Of-Living-Adjustments were adopted in 1975, the Social Security Administration will not increase payments in 2010 for more than 50 million recipients. Read the entire article here. For Social Security Disability Recipients, that means that their monthly payments will not increase next year as they have for the last 35 years. As an ABA member, you have access to the ABE-sponsored Long-Term Disability Insurance plan, which has an optional Cost-of-Living-Adjustment which automatically adds 3% of your chosen monthly disability insurance benefit each year following your first year of total disability for up to five years. If you select this option when applying for insurance and are approved, this COLA benefit is guaranteed and can not be reversed. Learn more about this and the other features of Long-Term Disability Insurance exclusively for ABA members.

It's National Save for Retirement Week!

Did you know that this week is National Save for Retirement Week? In a effort to help raise awareness of the issues involved in saving for retirement, this week was designated as a public awareness week by Congress. At ABE, we sponsor a quality, affordable insurance plan designed specifically to help continue your retirement savings contributions in the event of a disability. ABE-sponsored Retirement Contribution Disability Plan can help continue your retirement savings by providing disability benefits specifically to fund retirement savings vehicles. Since these plans can only be funded by earned income, in the event of a disability that terminates your ability to work and earn an income, you may not be able to fund your retirement. Learn more about the Retirement Contribution Disability Plan or about National Save for Retirement Week. Have questions regarding this ABE-sponsored plan? Post your comments here.

Is basic health insurance enough?

According to a June article by the New York Times an estimated three-quarters of people who are pushed into personal bankruptcy by medical problems actually had insurance when they became sick or were injured, just not enough. But that doesn’t have to be the case for you. As an ABA member, you are eligible to apply for the ABE-sponsored Excess Major Medical Plan II. This high deductible medical plan has affordable monthly premium rates (can be as low as $12/month depending on your age and selected deductible) and can supplement your basic health insurance in the event of a catastrophic injury or illness. With coverage for eligible hospital bills, home health care, doctor visits and even out-of-network care, once the deductible is met, this plan may provide peace of mind when you need it most.

Changes in your life may mean you should consider more coverage

I recently received a call from a member who was considering replacing her ABE-sponsored insurance plan with another insurance plan due to recent changes in her life. The member now felt she needed more insurance and didn’t realize she could apply to increase the coverage she currently had with ABE. The good news is you may be able to change your coverage under current certificate by adding benefits to get the coverage you need. If you are considering adding a new dependent, increasing your benefit amount, or any other coverage changes, call or email me and I can assist you with these changes. Comments on making changes to your ABE-sponsored plan? We would like to hear from you!! Just post a response to my blog.

Factor to Consider Regarding Disability Insurance

I was discussing our Disability plan with a member the other day and mentioned that a factor to consider regarding disability coverage is that if you pay the premiums yourself, versus having them paid by your law firm, your monthly benefits may be paid to you, tax free. (We do encourage you to confirm this with your tax adviser.) This means if you are currently paying the premium for a $10,000 monthly benefit amount and experience a qualifying disability you would receive that full monthly benefit payment. However, if you have the same benefit amount, but your law firm pays the premium, it is possible you may be taxed on the benefit received. Consult your tax adviser for more information. I encourage you to learn more about Long-Term Disability Insurance exclusively for ABA members, which can provide up to $12,000/month in replacement income in the event of a covered disabling illness or injury. You can also email or call me at 800-621-8491 ext. 6419 or comment below so we can discuss.

Going Green with Auto Pay

Recently I've had several members ask me if they can stop paper billing of their premium notices and go green by either paying by credit card or with another automatic payment plan. We are so glad to be hearing you want to "go green"!! Currently we do not have a credit card payment option, but we do offer an Automatic Payment Plan. Our paperless Automatic Payment Plan allows you to deduct your monthly premium from your bank account on the first day of each month (if the first falls on a weekend or a holiday, your account will be debited on the next business day). If you want to sign up for this convenient method of payment, click here to download an Automatic Payment Plan form. Comments on going green with paperless billing? We would like to hear from you!! Just post a response to my blog.

As your Personal Insurance Representative, I thought you might be interested in knowing some facts about disabilities. Did you know that according to the National Safety Council 2009 Injury Facts, in the next 60 minutes, 2,990 Americans will suffer a serious injury, and that during your working years, you’re up to four times more likely to suffer a serious disability than to die?

These facts make it clear that disabilities do happen. What would happen to you and your family if you became disabled and were unable to work? Have you made sure that you and your loved ones are protected from the potential financial impact that can be caused by a disabling injury or sickness? Having adequate disability insurance coverage may make all the difference between having to spend your savings and investments to pay your mortgage and other regular expenses, or having the monthly income that can help you stay focused on getting better.

Did you know that we offer Disability Income Insurance exclusively for ABA members that can protect your income in the event of such a disability? Post your comments or questions here!

As I have been speaking with members I have found that a common misconception is that many seniors feel they have sufficient health care coverage with Medicare and their Medicare supplemental insurance. However, there are limits to the benefits paid by any Medicare supplement plan — even the more comprehensive plans like F through J. Did you know that if you suffer a catastrophic illness or injury, these limits can be reached very quickly? Could you afford to pay the medical bills if your Medicare supplement limit is met? Excess Major Medical Insurance, exclusively for ABA members, can provide valuable insurance protection against catastrophic injury or illness, including paying some benefits for eligible home health care, convalescent home care and hospice care, along with eligible prescription drug coverage. Learn more about this valuable plan, or leave any questions or comments here.

I have been talking to ABA members about their insurance questions for over 23 years and lately have been discussing the fact that accidents can happen anytime, anywhere. ABE-sponsored Group Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance Plan (ADD), exclusively for ABA members, covers our members during overseas travel and it covers them both at work and at leisure. ADD can supplement any life insurance you may have since your family can get up to $500,000 of additional benefits if you die due to a covered accident. And, I think you'll find the premiums affordable. According to the National Safety Council 2008 Injury Facts, accidents are the fifth leading cause of death for people of all ages. I encourage you to click here to learn about this important Group plan (including plan features, costs, eligibility, renewability, limitations and exclusions), exclusively for ABA members. Call me today with any questions to leave your comment here!
